Biography

Carolyn focuses her practice on representing corporations in labor and employment matters. She has significant experience defending employers in litigation, mediation, and arbitration cases in federal and state courts and before administrative agencies involving Title VII, FLSA, FMLA, ADEA, ADA, the OSH Act, the WARN Act, and state-specific employment laws.

Prior to joining Mitts Milavec, Carolyn represented U.S. Senators and other Senate management in federal court litigation and at administrative hearings before the Office of Compliance as Assistant Counsel for Employment for the U.S. Senate.

In addition to handling litigation matters, Carolyn has successfully negotiated labor contracts, counseled clients regarding regulatory compliance, prepared corporate employment policies and handbooks, conducted investigations, and advised companies regarding litigation avoidance strategies. She regularly conducts seminars and other training regarding compliance with labor and employment laws.

Professional and Community Involvement

During law school, Carolyn served as an extern for the Honorable William J. Rea of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. While practicing law in California, Carolyn authored legislation for the California State Bar Conference of Delegates and participated as a delegate. As a member of the Duke Alumni Association Admissions Committee, Carolyn interviews and reports on applicants to Duke. She also speaks on various panels and acts as a judge for local moot court competitions.

Pro Bono

Carolyn received an award from the Orange County Bar Association for her pro bono service on behalf of the Orange County Poverty Law Center. In addition, she prosecuted criminal cases as a Deputy District Attorney in the Trial Attorney Program of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office in Santa Ana, California. She also directed the Adopt-A-School program in Santa Ana, California and taught in the D.C. Street Law Program in Washington, D.C.
